Curled up at your feet or bounding after a ball, your dog seems worlds away from a wild wolf howling at the moon. And yet, their story can be traced back to ancient wolf ancestors. The bond between people and dogs is one of the oldest known relationships between humans and animals.

So how did dogs evolve from ancient wolf ancestors into the dogs sharing our homes today? Here’s what we know, and what we’re still discovering, about the history of dog domestication.

## From ancient wolves to modern dogs

Let’s start at the beginning. Dogs descended from ancient wolf populations, with genetic and archaeological evidence helping scientists trace their origins.

There’s an important distinction, though. Today’s dogs didn’t descend from the grey wolves you’d see in the wild now. Instead, modern dogs and modern wolves share ancient wolf ancestors, before their evolutionary paths went in different directions.

So, your dog isn’t simply a tamed version of a modern wolf. Think of them more as very distant relatives.

## The first animals we domesticated

Did you know dogs are widely believed to be the first animals humans ever domesticated? And it all began long before we started farming, back when people lived as hunter-gatherers.

Unlike many other domesticated animals, which became closely associated with farming communities, dogs were living alongside humans thousands of years earlier. This long history together makes dogs unique among domesticated species.

## When and where were dogs first domesticated?

This is where things get interesting. While scientists agree that dogs were domesticated a very long time ago, exactly when and where it happened remains a bit of a mystery. Research suggests that dogs were domesticated tens of thousands of years ago, with parts of Europe and Asia among the possible places where it all began.

One reason it’s tricky to pinpoint is that dogs and wolves have interbred over time. Dogs also travelled with humans as they moved around the world, making their origins harder to trace. Some researchers even believe dogs may have been domesticated more than once. So, while we’ve learnt a lot about where our four-legged friends came from, there are a few pieces of the puzzle left to uncover.

## How wolves may have become dogs

We may not know exactly when and where dogs were first domesticated, but scientists have an interesting theory about how it all began. It’s called ‘self-domestication’, and the idea is that some wolves gradually became more comfortable living alongside humans.

Here’s how it may have happened: as humans began setting up camps, food scraps and leftovers attracted nearby wolves. Those that were less fearful of people were more likely to venture closer for an easy meal, while others kept their distance.

Over many generations, those less fearful wolves may have become increasingly comfortable around humans, eventually forming a closer bond with us. And that could have been the beginning of the special relationship we share with dogs today.

## How dogs changed over time

Once dogs became part of human societies, they travelled with people to new parts of the world. Over many generations, they adapted to different environments and to the roles people needed them to fill, developing a wide range of physical traits and temperaments.

Many of the dog breeds we recognise today are relatively recent and were developed through selective breeding. While this has led to the diversity seen in modern dogs, breeding for certain physical characteristics has also contributed to a range of health and welfare problems in some dogs, particularly where exaggerated features such as flat faces have been favoured.

That’s why the RSPCA encourages breeding practices that prioritise health, temperament, and welfare over appearance.

Whether you’re [adopting a dog from a shelter](https://www.adoptapet.com.au/)
or buying from a responsible breeder, it’s important to consider whether you’re able to meet their individual needs and provide them with appropriate care throughout their life.

## What we’re still discovering about the history of dogs

There’s plenty we’re learning about how dogs became the companions sharing our homes today. Scientists continue to study ancient DNA, modern genetics, and archaeological discoveries to piece together the story. And as new evidence comes to light, our understanding of when, where, and how dogs were domesticated continues to grow.

While we know that dogs descended from ancient wolf populations, there’s more to uncover about exactly how domestication happened and how their bond with humans began. And future discoveries may help answer some of the questions that remain about the origins of dogs.
