You’re in the zone, deadline looming, fingers flying, and then it happens: a warm, furry body folds itself neatly across your keyboard, and your screen fills with ‘aaaahhhjjjjkkkk’. If you share your home (and your home office) with a cat, you’ll know the drill all too well.

It’s one of the great feline mysteries: of all the spots in the house, why the laptop? As it turns out, there’s more to this quirky habit than meets the eye. Let’s unpack why your cat enjoys sitting on your laptop, and how to gently win back your keyboard.

## Reason 1: It’s lovely and warm

Here’s the big one. Cats love warmth, more than we often realise. They may actively seek out warm, cosy spots to rest. Think sunny windowsills, the warm patch on the couch, or a snug box with soft bedding.

A laptop that’s been running for a while gives off a gentle, steady heat, which may make it a very appealing place to settle. It’s a warm, comfy surface that lets them rest without working to keep warm. From their point of view, you’ve kindly provided a heated bed.

## Reason 2: It smells like you

Cats experience the world largely through scent. Your laptop, being something you use constantly and touch with your hands, carries your familiar, which could be one reason your cat is interested in spending time around it.

You might also notice your cat rubbing their face against your laptop. Cats have scent glands on their cheeks (and around their paw pads), so when they rub or [knead](https://rspcapetinsurance.org.au/pet-talk/cat-kneading-explained/)
, they’re depositing their own scent, essentially marking your laptop as part of their territory.

## Reason 3: It’s an easy way to get your attention

Cats are clever, observant creatures, and they’re often quick to pick up on what gets our attention. When you’re focused on your screen, your cat may find that settling on your laptop is the perfect way to remind you they’re there.

Here’s the catch: even when we gently move them off or say, ‘come on, not now’, we’re still giving them attention, which can unintentionally encourage the behaviour. Over time, your cat may learn that sitting on your laptop is a reliable way to get a reaction from you.

## Reason 4: They just want to be near you

Sometimes, it may simply be about being close to their favourite human. Many cats enjoy spending time with their people. And if you’re sitting at your desk, your laptop might just be the perfect spot to settle in beside you.

## Should I let my cat sit on my laptop?

That’s up to you, provided the laptop isn’t getting hot and your cat can rest there safely. While a little keyboard company can be lovely, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.

Laptops can get warm, especially when they’re working hard, and your cat could block the vents and cause the device to overheat. There’s also the risk of stray fur, curious claws, and the occasional accidental keystroke. If your laptop is getting hot, it’s best to gently encourage your cat to settle somewhere else.

## How to gently redirect the habit

If you’d prefer to keep your laptop to yourself, the good news is you don’t have to sacrifice quality time with your cat. The trick is to give them somewhere just as inviting to settle.

Here are a few ways to help your cat find a new favourite spot:

- **Make a cosy spot nearby.** Place a comfy cat bed, box, or perch close to your workspace so your cat can still keep you company. A sunny spot or a pet-safe thermal bed can make it even more appealing.
- **Add something familiar.** Pop a jumper or blanket that smells like you into their bed. Your familiar scent may help them feel comfortable and secure.
- **Reward their good choices.** When your cat settles into their own spot, offer a little praise, attention, or a treat. This helps them associate their new resting place with something positive.
- **Make time for play.** A quick play session or attention your cat enjoys before you start working can give your cat some welcome attention and help them settle while you’re busy.
- **Be patient and consistent.** If your cat returns to your laptop, calmly guide them back to their own spot. Avoid punishment, as this can cause unnecessary stress. A little patience and positive reinforcement can go a long way.

## Looking after your laptop-loving companion

Whether they’re curled up beside you or making themselves at home on your laptop, our cats have a special way of becoming part of our everyday routines. And while sharing your workspace with a furry ‘colleague’ might not always be practical, it’s one of the many little joys of being a cat parent.

Understanding your cat’s behaviour is just one way to help keep them happy and comfortable. Looking after their health is another.

## FAQs

### Why does my cat sit on my laptop?

Usually a mix of reasons: your laptop is warm, it smells like you, and sitting on it may get your attention. Cats are drawn to warm, cosy spots, and because you’ll almost always react when they plonk down on your keyboard, they happily make themselves at home.

### Is my cat trying to stop me from working by sitting on my laptop?

Probably not. Rather than being deliberately disruptive, your cat may be drawn to your laptop for a combination of reasons, including warmth, comfort, your scent, being close to you, or getting your attention. Unfortunately for your to-do list, your keyboard may tick several of these boxes.

### How can I stop my cat from sitting on my laptop?

The trick is to give your cat somewhere just as appealing to curl up. Try placing a cosy cat bed or perch near your workspace, ideally somewhere warm and sunny. Reward them when they settle into their new spot and gently redirect them if they wander back to your keyboard. Patience and consistency are key.

### Why does my cat always want attention when I’m working?

Cats are curious creatures, and when you’re focused on your laptop, they might feel they’re missing out on some quality time with you. Some cats also learn that jumping onto your desk can be a great way to get noticed. Try squeezing in a little playtime before you start working and keeping a few favourite toys nearby.
