If your dog already has a health condition, you might be wondering whether it’s too late to get pet insurance.

The good news is that having an existing health issue doesn’t necessarily mean your dog can’t be insured. However, pre-existing conditions generally aren’t covered, so it’s important to understand what that means for your dog and their cover.

In this guide, we’ll take a look at what a pre-existing condition is, why these exclusions exist, and what may still be covered if your dog develops a health condition in the future.

Is there dog insurance for pre-existing conditions?

Generally, pet insurance is designed to help with eligible illnesses and injuries that happen after your cover begins, rather than health problems that were already there. That means if your dog had an illness, injury, dental issue or behavioural problem before their cover started, or during an applicable exclusion period, it may be considered a pre-existing condition and excluded from cover.

However, that doesn’t mean your dog can’t be insured. They may still be covered for eligible new and unrelated health issues that arise later, subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, and applicable exclusion periods of their policy.

What counts as a pre-existing condition?

It’s easy to assume something only becomes pre-existing once a vet has officially diagnosed it. But that’s not necessarily the case. A pre-existing condition can include an injury, illness, dental issue, or behavioural problem your dog had before their cover started. It can also include a condition where signs were noticed before cover began, even if nobody had put a name to it yet.

So, when it comes to pre-existing conditions, when the signs first appeared can matter just as much as when the diagnosis was made. For example, if your dog had been repeatedly scratching or experiencing ear problems before their policy started and was later diagnosed with an allergy-related condition, their earlier symptoms may be relevant when the condition is assessed.

Why aren’t pre-existing conditions covered?

Pet insurance is there to help protect you against eligible health issues that arise after your cover begins. It isn’t designed to cover conditions that were already present beforehand.

Your policy may also have waiting periods. These are periods after cover begins, or in some circumstances after cover is increased, when certain conditions aren’t yet covered. The periods that apply depend on your policy and the type of condition, so it’s always worth checking the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to see what applies to your pup’s cover.

When is the best time to insure your dog?

Getting cover while your dog is young and healthy can reduce the chance of health conditions developing before their insurance begins and then being considered pre-existing.

So, if you’ve recently welcomed a puppy into the family, pet insurance may be something worth thinking about sooner rather than later. Eligibility requirements, including age requirements, may also apply, so it’s always best to check the current policy information before taking out cover.
